The IWGS would like to recognize Sarah P. Duke Gardens and their enormous efforts for the 2011 Waterlily Competition and especially the dedication of Tamara Kilbane.

Duke Gardens is a public non-profit botanical garden with no admission fees that is supported by public donations. They are affiliated with Duke University and grow the hybrid Longwood Victoria, Euryale ferox, and about 30+ other varieties of waterlilies, as well as an array of marginal aquatics. They also maintain two other ponds that contain a broad range of waterlilies and marginal plants.

Tamara has nine years of experience working in the water gardening industry. She is also a freelance garden writer and photographer who has published articles promoting the New Waterlily Contest. Tamara is assisted by several Duke Gardens interns, the rest of the Duke Gardens Staff, and several volunteers.

They have proven they are a well-qualified and motivated team. The IWGS give their whole hearted thanks to Sarah P Duke Botanical Gardens and Tamara Kilbane for making the IWGS 2011 Waterlily Competition a success.

Water snowflake (Nymphoides spp.) is part of a large family of what are commonly called waterlily-like plants because their leaves float at the surface of the water while the roots are anchored in soil below – much like the habit of a waterlily.

The plant is constantly reproducing, spreading runners out along the surface of the pond. Like water lettuce, you can pinch off the new plantlets to share with friends and help control growth. Because it’s a hardy grower, the Water Snowflake is great for ponds that suffer from constant algae blooms. The leaves will quickly spread across the water, providing shade and minimizing algae growth.

Popular snowflakes for the water garden include:

White Water Snowflake, Nymphoides indica

White Water Snowflake has round, floating, 2-inch leaves that are green with maroon variegation. Because they exchange oxygen on the surface, they need to remain dry and away from the spray of waterfalls and fountainheads. Hardy in Zones 8-11.

Yellow Water Snowflake, Nymphoides geminata

Yellow Water Snowflake has very frilly, star-shaped yellow flowers, green leaves, and is hardy in Zones 5-11. This free flowering plant has a fast-growing, running spreading habit. Ideally it grows in 4 to 24 inches of water.

Orange Water Snowflake, Nymphoides hydrocharioides

Native to Australia, this plant has orange, star-shaped flowers and bright green leaves with dark red or brown variegation, and is hardy in Zones 7-11.

Note: Some states include Water Snowflake on its list of invasive species. Check with your local government for its invasive species list.

A hardy waterlily was named Best New Waterlily for 2010, acing out 30 other entrants in the competition sponsored by the International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society (IWGS). Nymphaea ‘Wanvisa’ is the first hardy variety to be named ‘Best in Pond’ since the competition began in 1997.

Dr. Nopchai Chansilpa of Thailand, a waterlily hybridizer, introduced this waterlily to aquatic plant enthusiasts at the 2010 IWGS Symposium held in San Angelo, Texas.

It has salmon-pink petals streaked with white/cream, variegation never before seen in a hardy waterlily. It is described as a good bloomer with pads heavily mottled with deep bronze and bright green. Its vigorous and compact growth habits make it a good choice for most water gardens.

Dr. Chansilpa did not create this waterlily. He rescued it from an unspoiled pond of N. ‘Joey Tomocik’ in Thailand. He saw the potential of the vagrant and saved it from being discarded. For three years, he grew the plant to determine if the flower and pad variegations remained constant and if it could be propagated. Almost 500 plants later, the answer to both concerns was ‘Yes.’

The rescued waterlily first bloomed for its new owner on the day of Visakabucha, the most important holy day in Buddhism. It commemorates the birth, enlightment and death of Lord Buddha, (Wan= day and Visa=Visakabucha).

N. ‘Wansiva’ is offered through the IWGS Collector’s Plant(s) of the Year (CAPY) program. This program started in 2010 to offer members and others an opportunity to purchase limited new and/or rare aquatic plants prior to widespread distribution. It is also a society fundraiser, furthering education, research and the conservation and enjoyment of aquatic plants.

Another exclusive CAPY offering in 2011 is the Best New Waterlily of 2009. N. ‘Tanzanite,’ from Florida Aquatic Nursery, is a day-blooming tropical with deep purple blooms and mottled pads.
