2020 IWGS SYMPOSIUM NAPLES, FLORIDA, USA - JULY 29 - AUGUST 2

This year’s symposium is in Naples, FL, USA. Naples is world renown as a paradise of natural and cultural gems tucked away in Southwest Florida, where the Gulf of Mexico's turquoise water meets white sand, wild islands and downtowns filled with artful treasures, culinary delights and countless other discoveries. It is home to Naples Botanical Garden, the feature site of activity for this year’s symposium.  Naples Botanical Garden is the current host site of the New Waterlily Competition and this year will be the 20th anniversary of the competition. The 170 acre garden has over 360,000 gallons of water gardens with over 100 different varieties of waterlilies. We will get to tour Florida Aquatic Nurseries, Fairchild Tropical Gardens, and The Kampong National Tropical Botanical Garden. Join us as we celebrate the comradery of water garden friends, represent your business to the industry, learn and connect with experts in the field, and visit this slice of paradise!

There will not be any society-scheduled Pre or Post symposium activities. See “Areas of Interest” for suggestions of places to go and things to see. Please register as soon as you can, as space is limited in some of the venues.  The symposium sold out in France in 2019.

The Full Conference Registration fee of $549 (Early Bird) includes the Symposium fee and ALL events, meals, & bus rides.

The One Day Conference Fee of $225 is for July 31st, and includes all seminars, lunch and dinner. Separate registration forms are required for each of these 2 options. Please note that the prices will increase after June 28, 2020. Hotel rooms are not included in this symposium price.

The nearest airport is at Fort Meyers. It takes 45 mins- 1 hour to get from the Ft. Myers International Airport (RSW) to the Hotel.

Join the IWGS Board of Directors and local community partners as we welcome the International Waterlily and Water Garden Society to Naples over hors d’oeuvres and social hour.

Ever wonder how some large-scale water features are plumbed? This behind the scenes tour will look over the plumbing system and pumps of two of the large water features (Space is limited to 20 people only!) Learn about and discuss how the systems changed over time, what the garden likes about, and the challenges it faces managing the 360,000 gallons of ponds.

2:00-3:30 pm- Wooten’s Everglades Airboat Tour and Alligator Show
Feel the expansive beauty of the unique Everglades grasslands as you glide along the water in an airboat! Learn about animals, plants, and area history from the captains. See wild alligators, birds, and other animals–if Mother Nature is willing!

There’s a good chance you’ll see alligators and other wild animals on our airboat and swamp buggy tours, but Mother Nature makes no guarantees. That’s where the Wooten’s Animal Sanctuary & Alligator Park comes in! It’s home to animals like:

    • Two tigers
    • Two lions
    • Otters
    • Turtles
    • Crocodiles
    • Over 100 alligators, from babies to giants
  • Peek through your hands as Wooten’s professional alligator handlers put on a daring alligator show in their Animal Sanctuary & Alligator Park

4:00-5:15 pm- Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk at Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park
This notable natural land mark of virgin cypress swamp is a must see! On the dry hammocks of the swamp, you’ll see tropical trees like Strangler Fig, and Royal Palms raise their regal fronds above the low canopy of the forest. This is a fern-filled bowl, fed by a clear, clean rain-fed sheet flow of water. You’ll see tall red-tipped marsh ferns, primordial-looking giant leather ferns, and delicate royal ferns. Water spangles, a floating fern, swirl across shallow pools.

Dinner includes Caesar Salad, Fresh Rolls, Pineapple BBQ Chicken, Saffron Rice, Vegetable Medley, Cookies, Tea, and Coffee. There will also be a Cash Bar.

Florida Aquatic Nurseries has been in business for over 60 years. Through the years, the growing sites have increased to 15 acres. Outdoors, there are 500 concrete production tanks for aquarium plants and waterlilies and 50 marginal beds for pond plants. In addition, the seven greenhouses total over 100,000 square feet of growing space making us one of the largest aquatic plant growers in the U. S. We will have the rare opportunity to tour the nursery with Brandon McLane Vice President of Florida Aquatic Nurseries

Fairchild is considered one of the best botanic gardens in the world. The plant collection nestles within the beautiful framework of the landscape design providing an unparalleled sense of awe. The horticultural collections and exhibits make the experience of visiting Fairchild unforgettable through guided and self-guided tours of the Garden. We will tour the gardens with a guide via Tram tour and have some time left over for self- exploration.

The Kampong contains a fascinating array of tropical fruit cultivars and flowering trees. Named for the Malay or Javanese word for a village or cluster of houses, The Kampong is the former estate of Dr. David Fairchild, the famed botanical explorer who traveled throughout Southeast Asia and other tropical regions collecting exotic plants he introduced to the U.S. We will tour with the Kampong with its staff.
